Thanks for parsing these out, Lesley!

Try this--might let you see "You Don't Know Me" without having to line up a soundtrack:

These tributes to Sergeant Milner are also from me (although I had some sign-in problems with YouTube and had to create a new account in order to post them):

I will re-post here something that I wrote when I first made this video a few years ago, with a little bit of editing. These thoughts were originally posted on the old QE forum:

So I guess all the Sam/Foyle discussion on the other thread might be just the entree by which to spring my newest video on you… another one about Mr Foyle and Miss Stewart—but be warned that this one carries through much more overtly on the notion of romantic feeling between them (or at least, romantic feeling on his part). Nicola had asked if I could set such a theme to this song.

I’ll admit that some of the scenes are a bit of a fake—thoughtful moments or facial expressions that didn’t have the same meaning in the context of what was really happening. But I don’t feel too guilty about it, because there had to be something steering so many of us in the direction of wanting to believe in the Sam/Foyle ship!

In relation to the concept of romance between Foyle and Sam, I have a sort of dual way of thinking. Though I was reasonably sure from the start that the Foyle’s War writers would never pair them off, and I’m perfectly contented with that, I’m one of the viewers who could easily see Mr Foyle and Miss Stewart happily married, fulfilling the lovely ways they work together and seem attracted to each other. I’d readily agree that it is a rare thing for a couple about 27 years apart in age to be in a romantic relationship, but I’ve known successful couples in that situation, and in these characters I accept the possibility because:

1. Sam has a certain maturity. She has had to look after her mother, walk the straight and narrow because of all the vicars in her family, endure bombings and wartime deprivations. She has not only faced deaths, but shown an ability to compartmentalize (except in the case of the little boy who died in an explosion—which pretty near shattered Christopher, too) and work with her boss to solve cases. She has youthful exuberance and is relatively inexperienced, but I never regard her as little-girlish.

2. I honestly don’t see Foyle’s attitude toward her as paternal—he admires her abilities, sometimes gets annoyed with her, treats her in an egalitarian way (having her help him in the interpretation of clues, listening to her ideas about what’s going on in the cases) if not as a professional equal, and he finds her attractive.

3. Christopher Foyle may be greying and balding, but he is fit and has a certain youthfulness of his own—he can dash into a bomb shelter or chase a criminal at a good clip, he floored a heavyset man with a punch, and he walks with speed and grace. Not that long ago he played football on the police team. Certainly his mind is a steel trap. He is a gentle and considerate man, but he can be provoked and react; go after what he wants/believes in. I think that is where the fanfic writers and their avid readers get our fantasies about his being both tender and capable of passion.

4. If he did fall for Sam, I agree that it would probably take unusual circumstances to get him past certain reservations about what he would view as saddling her with an older husband who in all likelihood will die long before she does. But I don’t see him necessarily resisting if Sam fell for him and could convince him of it.

5. The way that Michael Kitchen and Honeysuckle Weeks play the characters, they have undeniable rapport and I see a sexual charge there, but I can buy that some may not interpret the acting in the same way. :rose:

Oh, and one more note on this subject:

I absolutely love Lynne's story about Foyle and Sam, and it happens to be a Christmas story! A most enchanting and whimsical one. It's called "Christmas Magic," and you will find it in the Foyle's War Fan Fiction section.
