How do I...?

Posting images

To post an image on the board you first need to have it uploaded to your own account on an image-hosting website such as Photobucket (basic accounts on such websites are free and will store many images). When creating picture albums on such websites, it's wise to mark them as "private" so that your images can't be picked up by search engines such as Google.
Edited here to add ... Photobucket is not now recommended, because it now charges a high annual fee for 3rd party hosting.

NOTE: If you wish to post an image that you've found on the Internet, copy it and upload it to your account, then post it from there. Linking to an image in that account is fine, but don't link directly to an image found on any other website or on a forum - doing so is called "hot-linking", and to website and forum administrators it's a hanging offence because it consumes their bandwidths and slows down their websites and forums! Linking to a page on a website or forum that contains the image is okay, but not to the image itself.

When you have an image that you wish to display, you'll need to ensure that it is in the right proportions for posting. Make sure that it is in the lowest resolution that will still give you a clear picture, and keep it to reasonable dimensions and resolutions - large pictures in a high resolution use up a lot of bandwidth and slow down the loading of the forum. For an example of reasonable dimensions and resolutions, go to the one of the caps threads in the FW forum and right-click on one of the pictures posted there. If using Internet Explorer, left-click on "Properties" in the menu that appears; if using Firefox, click on "View image info". The size (indicating resolution) of the image will be given in kb, and the dimensions in px (pixels).

When you've uploaded your image to your account on the image-hosting website …

1. Copy the image location code that the image-hosting website will give to the picture (on Photobucket, left-clicking once on the code copies it automatically).
2. Paste the copied code into your post at the point at which you wish it to appear. In the text of your post, the location code will be prefixed by square brackets containing the letters img, and suffixed by square brackets containing /img.
3. Click on the "Preview" button below the draft of your message to check that the picture appears as you want it. Then click on "Submit".

Notes: Images can be posted side by side. If you want a little space between them, you must type something, such as a row of dots or the titles of the images, as the board won't allow you to separate by only spaces.

Must have posted this elsewhere, but I'll put it here, too, as it seems the best place.

New feature on the posting window allows you to set the image width as you post:

Click on that and it appears in the posting window.
In between the two sets of brackets paste the link to your photo. You should be using Photobucket or something like that to host your photos.
You type in the width after the equal sign (for most photos 400 works well, as it's not too large).
You may have to delete from your link code the beginning and ending [IMG] as they are replaced here with [IMGW].
Try a preview and see how it looks. If it's too big or too small, just change the number for the width.

I'm a pole selector; I select poles.
