Hacks showing scheduled for New Year's Day

Postby Lynnedean » Wed Dec 07, 2011 11:17 pm

Hacks is to be shown on Channel 4 on New Year's Day at 10pm UK time.

From the blurb on DigiGuide:
Written and directed by Drop the Dead Donkey and Outnumbered writer Guy Jenkin, Hacks takes a satirical swipe at the recent momentous events surrounding the British newspaper industry. Set in a fictional paper the drive to get the story is intense - the phrase 'by any means necessary' doesn't even cover it. Phone hacking, blagging, pinging... the staff here do it all. But it's all about to unravel and in a big way... Editor Kate Loy doesn't take any prisoners and the Proprietor of the tabloid she runs, Stanhope Feast demands she always gets the biggest stories first. But her moral compass went awry a long time ago - something that's about to cause her major problems. As the scandal breaks and the net closes in on her, things get funnier for the viewer as things go from bad to worse for the characters. The stellar cast includes Kayvan Novak, Nigel Planer, Phil Davis, Alexander Armstrong, Gordon Kennedy, Russ Abbott and Celia Imrie.

Director: Guy Jenkins
Starring: Claire Foy, Michael Kitchen

Everyone --
Hacks hasn't been posted on Amazon.com US yet -- but please let us know if someone sees it! It's likely the only way we'll be able to see this in the US.
Peace,
Chris.

Great photo! (A picture is truly worth a thousand words with MK's characters. :pleased: )

And I hope there will eventually be a way we can see it in the US!

Hopefully, this is the kind of show that might fit well into PBS Masterpiece Contemporary that airs each fall. The downside is that we would have to wait almost a full year to see it here in the states. Certainly better than nothing though.

Went back to the description that goes with MK's photo. What do "blagging" and " pinging" mean?

Blagging means obtaining something by clever talk or lying, Sunshine. It's from the French word blaguer - "tell lies".

I'm not sure about "pinging" in this context. In computer terms, to ping means to send a message to a computer to see if receives a response which would verify that it was active. It may, then, refer to checking mobile phone numbers in the same way, or - perhaps more likely - to gaining access to someone's emails. Anyone know for sure?

Here are two more photos:

http://www.comedy.co.uk/guide/tv/hacks/

I'm not so sure about the one on the right, but Love the one of the left. If anyone finds a bigger version, I'll be forever grateful.

And secondly, Channel 4 has added a short clip of Hacks.

But no reason to feel left out if you're not in the UK or cannot pretend that you are, there is not a single second of MK in it :rantblue:

Another good find, Bee. Don't think either picture is very good of him. One on the left might be good, if we could see it. I love the first one posted of him with the newspaper. His look cracks me up.

I tried to make these pictures bigger, but they get pretty blurry.

Thanks,

Sunshine, the article that you posted is from the end of November and the scheduling info provided by Lynne is from early December, so hopefully, it's going to be fine :foyle1:

The show will definitely air on January 1st, Sunshine - it's listed in the TV schedule for that day.

Re your earlier question about the meaning of "pinging" - this newspaper article indicates that it refers to finding out where people are by means of their mobile phones ... The Telegraph: police involvement in hacking scandal

Whew! Glad to hear that! :vigil:

If it does eventually show up on US television, I wonder if it might show up on a cable outlet, such as Comedy Central, as opposed to PBS..... :puzzled:

Everyone --
I wish I could see the clip here in the US -- but when I try to access it, I get a message that it can't be viewed from my country. Oh well, I'll have to wait and be patient to hear all your reviews after it airs in the UK!

As for the pictures being "bad" -- I wonder if they were trying to make him look more like Rupert Murdoch -- kind of old and crochety???
Peace,
Chris.
