Calling all readers, writers and fly tyers who visit QE! Do give Machine without Horses by Helen Humphreys a try. As usual for this author, it's a short, exquisite book. Humphreys was inspired by the New York Times obituary for Megan Boyd, who lived in Scotland, in a tiny cottage without electricity or running water, alone - except for her dog - and spent every waking hour tying beautiful, intricate salmon flies. The first part of the book gives some insight into how Humphreys found her way into writing the second part - the richly imagined life of a woman, revered by salmon fishers (including Prince Charles), but about whom very little is known.
