Included here for completeness' sake. I've also quoted from it in the FW Series 9 thread, as it lists his sources for the three new episodes.

With the Iraq writing, he apparently takes a page from Mel Brooks, who said he wrote "The Producers" (both versions) because he believed that one of the ways to defeat the evil of Hitler was to laugh at it.
Just looked over the chapter on "Horse Racing and Illegal Rambling."

I haven't got the requisite capacity for deceit.

From his diary, is this encouraging for FW fans?

The more I write this show, the more passionate I become about it, and although we’re thought of as a mystery or a detective series, it’s actually the true, often unknown stories of the second world war (and now the Cold War) that fascinate me.

Hope so.
