Milner in The Russian House

HE WAS SUCH A JERK. I was so disappointed in him! Especially because I could easily have had sympathy for what a difficult spot he was in with his first investigation as a DI, but then he was rude and let his slimy constable sass Mr. Foyle, and (as Mr. Foyle said) HE UPSET SAM. And what's more, he flubbed the arrest! Being a jerk didn't even pay off!

Looking forward to "Killing Time" with trepidation!

Well, as Foyle says "It's a poor return for the five years we spent together. But if that's how you want to handle yourself now it's entirely up to you." I suppose the lesson Milner has to learn there is that having the rank doesn't automatically confer leadership qualities.

I rather enjoyed Det Constable Perkins though. He was good value as the "disrespectful junior officer". And he gives us all a decent laugh by being the butt of Foyle's joke at the end of The Hide (S703) so keep watching!

I love the scene in which DC Perkins (apparently not just ignorant about horses, but frightened of them) doesn't recognize the stallion. Everyone plays that wonderfully.

Yes, and I thought the actress who played that young woman did a very nice job in the role. These small parts are so vital for setting the right tone in each episode, not to mention giving employment to aspiring, or fading, British talent!

But Milner - really? Such a shame to see a former protege and colleague fall short of the mark! :foyle3:

It always makes me sad when I see Milner being so mean to Sam in this episode. They had gotten on so well through series 1-5. And with Foyle, too. Apart from that uncomfortable moment in The White Feather, they got on just fine.

I do miss Milner in the new series. Wish AH could have somehow wrote him in, making him "make up" with Sam and Foyle so it would be "like old times." (although, there is a bit of forgiveness in The Hide).

Having just rewatched The Russian House, some of Milners behavior seems very odd to me.
And I don't see the point for AH writing it this way. After having both Sam and Foyle as guests for the christening the day before, why would Milner suddenly be so rude to them? I think it is out of character and not a natural development for a mild person like Milner.
..but above all, Losberne, he was irresponsible!

I think Milner's new wife is the problem. She is very pushy and eggs him on to to disregard Foyle. Milner does seem to regret his actions. I think she was disrespectful of Foyle in Bleak Midwinter. Do you think it odd that neither Sam or Foyle appear to be godfather to the baby?Especially Sam as she seemed to have a good' sisterly' relationship with Milner up to that point. I suppose that plot line would not have worked with what followed.

Gosh, I must say that it never occurred to me that it was a judgemental look; just a somewhat startled one. After all, he keeps perfectly calm as she tells him how she felt about it--and then even twinklingly ribs her about having had a motive. I've always loved that scene, in which they walk up and down in the garden.

I, too, never saw it as a judgemental look, more startled and concerned for her (perhaps worried she's been coerced into posing?). And his follow up line "Interesting work" allows her (imho) to feel she can tell him about what has happened, and what possessed her to sit for Sir Leonard.
This was always a strange episode to me - so many uncharacteristic moments. No one seemed quite to know what to do with themselves once the war was over...

I guess it's AH startled back into work by a network that "unpulled" the plug.

There were actually a lot of moments I liked in "The Russian House," and yes, that included the sequence with Sam and Foyle at her boss' house. But poor Anthony Howell and how his character got treated starting in that episode. I still wonder why he couldn't have stayed with the police in Hastings, especially since Foyle was planning to retire.
Just looked over the chapter on "Horse Racing and Illegal Rambling."

I haven't got the requisite capacity for deceit.
