Actually, that's how a waistcoat is meant to be worn, with the last button unfastened. It's one of those sartorial traditions.

I had no idea it was traditional to leave the bottom button of the waistcoat undone
Seems a curious tradition to uphold. Does it make for a more comfortable fit or something?

Im clearly no fashion guru and just figured it was a wardrobe malfunction

There's a legend that the bottom-button custom dates back to the portly King Edward VII, who preferred to wear his this way and thus started a lasting fashion.

Clever ploy to use the humble button to try and prevent the disgusting practice as I imagine it could be quite a painful experience, to catch ones nostril on a button
I imagine it probably caused a button shortage though
